This song is most often associated with grief and loss, either by the death of a person or by the demise of a relationship. Neither of these things were on my mind when I woke up with it in my head this morning. I think my dreams must have a constant musical soundtrack. The experience has always seemed a bit like casually walking out the door of a shop with piped in music or exiting a car after a particular song has concluded on the radio.
Due to its somber, melancholic nature I was, at first, not terribly eager to record a version of my own. But instead I found that nothing else I auditioned really spoke to me. Even so, I do appreciate the references made to light in a positive, powerful sense, because it appeals to my Quaker sensibilities. One could even take the lyrics in a Christian context, referencing to Jesus' relatively limited period of ministry on Earth.
My apologies for a slightly croaky singing voice. I've been recovering from a head cold. The guitar I'm playing is on loan from a fellow musician and considerably smaller than what I'm used to, though I have to say that in some ways it is much easier to play.
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days,
those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.
I bless the Light,
I bless the Light that
shines on you believe me.
And though you're gone,
You're with me every single day,
believe me.
Days I'll remember all my life,
Days when you can't see
wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that
very soon you'd leave me,
But it's all right,
Now I'm not frightened
of this world, believe me.
I wish today could be tomorrow,
The night is dark,
It just brings sorrow, let it wait.
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days,
those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.
Days I'll remember all my life,
Days when you can't
see wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that
very soon you'd leave me,
But it's all right,
Now I'm not frightened of this world,
believe me.
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days,
those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.
I bless the Light,
I bless the Light that
shines on you believe me.
And though you're gone,
You're with me every single day, believe me.
And though you're gone,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.
